Kids Eat Free Nights @modmarket

So we have a new promo of sorts at Modmarket.  From now on, on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings, kids under 12 can get a free side salad or half pizza (more than enough to fill up a little nipper) when a full size entree is purchased.  So if Mom gets her full size Mongolian salad, little Sally can get her grilled cheese flatbread for free!  Hope to see a bunch of kids chowing down on Modfood tonite!

‘Failing’ to improve customer flow

Everyone who has eaten at modmarket quickly realizes that there is a bit of a ‘system’ for how you order your food.  Since the day we opened, we have been constantly tweaking how people queue to the counter and order their food.  Our ‘old’ system worked great at peak times but could be confusing for people during slow times.  In my former life as an engineer, I often preached the mantra ‘fail often to succeed sooner’ and was a huge fan of prototyping things to see how they worked.  Despite this, I was very vocal about not trying a new line system because I didn’t think it would work.  Luckily, Rob was equally vocal about giving it a shot and so today we changed our signs a bit and gave it a shot.  Did it work?  Not really.  However, in seeing how the new system did not work, we came up with a way of making our original system work better.  A good lesson in innovating and a good lesson in practicing what you preach – had it not been for Rob, I would have been too chicken to try the new system that I was sure would ‘fail’.

Pumpkin Pie Flatbread = yum

After about a month of prototyping, our Pumpkin Pie flatbread is now ready for consumption.  Pretty simple – dough, a pumpkin pie mix created on the fly by Rob and myself, and some whipped cream.  It tastes soooooooooo good.  People keep ordering a half and wishing they ordered a full size.  Don’t be one of those people, order big to start with, you will not regret it.

Lose Weight By Working At Modmarket

Had an interesting conversation with some of our staff yesterday.  A group of them was chowing down on some flatbreads and salads and I commented on how cool it was that our staff seem to take full advantage of our 70% off associate discount by eating the vast majority of their meals at Modmarket.  One of our staffers pointed out that in addition to everyone liking the food,  almost everyone on our staff had lost weight or been feeling healthier since we opened our doors.  Further questioning revealed that Fletcher (aka Flexor), our mohawk sporting, cross trained salad maker/cashier/dish washer/flatbread artisan had lost 18 lbs since we opened and the only lifestyle change he had made was eating at Modmarket.  That is pretty awesome.  Our food is not health food.  It is just real food.  Simple, whole ingredients combined in ways that taste great.  Our portions are big enough that I don’t think anyone leaves hungry but not so big that people are over eating.  I always figured that if you ate a ‘modmarket diet’ everyday, your health would improve.  This is mainly because it is so difficult to find food like what we serve at Modmarket unless you cook every meal yourself.  And even then, it can be tough (and very time consuming!).  If anyone wants to try this out themselves – email me and we will work out a special discount option for you(first come, first serve).  You eat at Modmarket everyday for lunch and dinner for a month and track your weight and how you feel overall.  Kind of like a reverse ‘supersize me’.    You can order anything you want off the menu, all of the choices are fair game.  Be a fun little experiment.  My guess is that you will feel better by the end of it and maybe even lose a little bit of weight.  Any takers???
