The cost of food

I guess we’re on a bit of an infographic kick lately.  I saw this posted at one of our favorite blogs, Fooducate.  It’s the average allocation of every dollar spent on food in the US.  That tiny amount on the left ends up in the hands of farmers and the rest of it goes toward marketing.  I think that’s really unfortunate as it needlessly drives up the cost of food and makes it a lot harder for struggling farmers to make ends meet.  Plus, most of those marketing dollars go towards convincing you to eat foods that you really should not eat (Happy’s Meals anyone?)  That’s why farmer’s markets like the one here in Boulder are such positive events.  You get to shake hands with the people who grow your food, 100% of the profit goes to the people who grow it and you get some really delicious stuff.  It’s not hard to make the mental leap between corporations spending tons of money to market bad food to people and the rising obesity epidemic.  Hopefully we’ll see this infographic reversed in the future but until then we still have our farmer’s markets (and Boulder’s Farmer’s Market is one of the best, which is why we feel so lucky to have a Modmarket stand there!)
